There are a number of different factors that go into the final stainless steel countertops cost that you’ll see on the bill when the installation is complete.  Though the metal may seem very basic, several aspects can make a very big difference to the final price, such as the quality of the steel, the finish you choose – for example, mirror, satin, or brushed – the edge style – for example, square, bullnose, or bevel – the manufacturer, and of course, the quantity of the metal required to complete the task. 

Installed, the final stainless steel countertops cost usually falls between $120 and $160, which is comparable to high end good quality stone counter materials such as granite.  As this material isn’t exactly cheap, it’s good to be able to  perform your own estimate.  Though you won’t be able to come up with a precise number, the following steps will give you a general concept of what stainless steel countertops cost.

The first step to creating stainless steel countertops cost estimates is to obtain a tape measure, and either a calculator, pen and paper, or a spreadsheet.  If your counter’s shape is at all complicated or will require any awkward reaching, you might find the measuring easier to do with another person’s help.

The first part of your measuring will be the length of the counter.  Take this measurement in inches.  Make sure to take the measurement from the wall and not from the surface of a backsplash or your measurement will come up short of accurate.  For the purposes of this exercise, an example of 150 inches will be used.

Measure the width of your counters from the wall right to the end of any overhang that might exist overtop of the cabinet below.  For this example, a width of 25 inches will be used.

By multiplying the length by the width, you will come up with the surface area of the countertop in square inches.  For example, 150 x 25 = 3,750 square inches.

Since stainless steel sheets are priced by the square foot, your next step is to turn your surface area calculation into square feet.  To do this, divide your total square inches by 144.  The quotient will be the square footage of your counter surface.  For example, 3,750 ÷ 144 = 26.04 square feet.

Now that you know the surface area of your counter, you can multiply it by the price per square foot of the stainless steel surface.  This example takes the installation fee into consideration as a professional will need to install the counter.  As the price of this metal counter, installed, is between $120 and $160, this example will work with the average price of $140 for an estimate that sits somewhere in the middle of both extremes.  Multiply the surface area by the price per square foot:  26.04 x 140 = $3645.60.

Now you have your estimate of what stainless steel countertops cost for your kitchen.  Keep in mind that this final total can vary for several reasons.  Furthermore, it doesn’t take into consideration additional features such as a backsplash, a special edge, a unique shape, plumbing, or additional built-in features.
